BRAHMAN -TEXTS THEIR WORLD VIEW
In the first part of the history of Vedic studies, particularly in the 19th Century, the Brähmaņa-texts were rather neglected. Most of the scholars used to concentrate on the Rgveda. Vedic studies were thus limited in their scope. It was S. Lévi's book La doctrine du sacrifice dans les Brāhmaņa (Paris, 1898) and H. Oldenberg's book Die Weltan schauung der Brähmaņa-texte (Göttingen 1919) which gave a firm foundation to the studies on these texts which were further carried out by many other scholars in Europe and America in the 20th Century. The present book is an English translation from the original Germen book of Oldenberg. It deals with the way of thinking of the Brahmana-texts, their philosophy in general and points out how the Brahmaņa-texts prepare a background for the development of the Upanisadic philosophy. This important book remained comparatively neglected in India because of its language and also because of it's unavailability in Indian libraries. Moreover, the original book is printed in Gothic script and its language as well as its style of presentation, is very much pedantic. Now it is expected that the thoughts of Oldenberg on this important branch of Vedic texts namely the Brahmana-texts will be widely known.
